Heritage and Federation House Painting in Sydney
Refined Repairs focuses on premium, heritage and Federation homes across the Upper North Shore, the Hills District, Lane Cove and Hunters Hill. Older homes reward a slower, more careful approach: knowing exactly what you're painting, preparing it properly and choosing a system that suits each surface.

Why Older Homes Need a Different Approach
Good painting starts with knowing what you're painting, and that matters most on an older home. A Federation house can have original timber, decades of paint layers, masonry and plaster side by side, each needing different preparation, a different primer or a different paint, stain or coating.
Timber Joinery and Decorative Detail
Weatherboards, verandah posts, fretwork, bargeboards, timber windows and doors often carry the character of a period home. They need careful preparation and clean edges, so the detail stays crisp rather than buried under paint.
Layers of Previous Paint
Many older homes have been repainted several times. We assess the condition of the existing paint before deciding how to prepare it, because a new finish is only as sound as what's underneath.
Masonry, Render and Face Brick
Masonry and render behave differently from timber and plaster. Some surfaces on period homes, such as sandstone and face brick that were never painted, are usually best left unpainted, and councils may restrict painting them in conservation areas.
Interiors: Walls, Ceilings, Doors and Trims
Inside, older homes often have higher ceilings, original doors and deep skirting boards. Walls and ceilings are prepared so small marks, holes and cracks don't show through the new paint, and trims are painted so edges are clean.
How We Approach a Heritage or Federation Home
Assess every surface first
We look at the condition of each surface and the scope of the work, then recommend a system that suits it. Dulux is our preferred paint.
Prepare properly
Where needed, we fill small holes, repair minor cracks and damaged areas, and patch, sand and smooth surfaces. Suitable exterior surfaces can be pressure cleaned and allowed to dry properly before painting. On older paintwork, preparation methods are chosen with possible lead paint in mind (see below).
Protect the home
Floors, furniture and surrounding surfaces are covered and protected to suit the work being done.
Talk it through before going further
If we find something that needs more attention than expected, we explain it and discuss it with you before moving ahead.
Colour Advice for Federation and Period Homes
Federation-era homes are often associated with traditional heritage palettes rather than modern brilliant whites. We can provide colour advice to help you choose a scheme that suits the period and style of your home.
If your home is a heritage item or sits in a heritage conservation area, your local council may have colour guidance for external work. Paint manufacturers also offer heritage colour ranges.
Heritage Status and Council Requirements
Not every Federation or older home is heritage-listed. Whether council requirements apply depends on the property's heritage status and the work proposed. If your home is a heritage item or sits in a heritage conservation area, some external work, such as changing colours or painting sandstone or face brick that has never been painted, may need to be checked with your local council first.

Requirements vary between councils and properties, so they're best confirmed with the relevant council on a case-by-case basis. This is general information, not planning advice.
Lead Paint in Older Homes
Older homes, including many Federation homes, may have lead-based paint beneath later coats. A home's age, or what's known about its history, only indicates a potential risk: lead paint can't be reliably identified by eye.
Refined Repairs has practical experience working on older properties, including Federation homes where lead paint may be present. Safety precautions are based on the condition of the paint and the type of work being done:
-
where lead paint is suspected, the risk is properly assessed before work begins
-
we arrange testing where necessary
-
lead-safe methods, appropriate PPE, dust control and thorough clean-up are used, in line with applicable safety requirements
If you know or suspect your home has lead paint, mention it when you request a quote. The NSW Government's LeadSmart website also has guidance for homeowners.
Heritage Painting FAQs
Do you paint Federation and heritage homes?
Yes. Premium, heritage and Federation homes are our focus, inside and out.
How do you handle possible lead paint?
Age alone only indicates potential risk, and lead paint can't be reliably identified by eye. Where it's suspected, we assess the risk, arrange testing where necessary, and use lead-safe methods, PPE, dust control and clean-up in line with applicable safety requirements.
Can you help with heritage colour schemes?
Yes. We can provide colour advice for period homes. If your home is a heritage item or in a conservation area, check your council's colour requirements as well.
Can you match the work to my council's heritage requirements?
Yes. Where council requirements apply to your home, we'll work to the colours and scope you've confirmed with council. Whether anything applies depends on your property's heritage status and the work proposed.
